Origin of Thanksgiving |

Thanksgiving has become a day of turkey and football. But do you know how it started? The concept of Thanksgiving dates to the 17th Century with the first Thanksgiving celebration in the Americas being held in 1621. According to the website thanksgiving-day.org, "While some historians believe pilgrims were quite religious so, their thanksgiving would've included a day of fasting and praying," which is quite different than contemporary celebrations. We should never forget that it is a day set aside to give thanks to God. In 1963, President Abraham Lincoln issued a Thanksgiving Proclamation setting aside the last Thursday of November as an annual day of giving thanks to "the gracious gifts of the Most High God." |
